Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 10, 2026

Our Privacy Commitment

At ShareFile, we are committed to protecting your privacy. This privacy policy explains how our service works and what data, if any, we collect when you use our file sharing application.

Information We DO NOT Collect

  • Your Files: We never store, access, or process your files. Files are transferred directly between your devices using WebRTC technology, completely bypassing our servers.
  • Personal Information: We do not require registration, email addresses, or any personal information to use our service.
  • File Content: We never see the contents of your files. Files transfer directly between devices via WebRTC, so the actual bytes never reach our servers. We do record basic metadata (file name and size, as declared by the sender) for the transfer to work.

Information We May Collect

1. Analytics Data (Google Analytics)

We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our website. This includes page views and session duration, browser type and operating system, general geographic location (country/region), and referral sources. This data is anonymized and helps us improve the service. You can opt out by using browser extensions that block Google Analytics.

2. Transfer & Connection Metadata

To establish peer-to-peer connections, our backend briefly stores room codes, WebRTC signaling data, and basic transfer metadata: file name and size, browser type, and approximate location (city/country). This data is stored in our database for as long as it is needed to operate the service, is never sold, and is not linked to advertising or used to build profiles of you.

3. Account Information (Optional)

You can use ShareFile without an account. If you choose to create a free account, we store your email address and basic account details (such as your plan tier) so we can display them on your account page. Account creation is entirely optional and is never required to send or receive files.

4. Advertising (Google AdSense)

We may display advertisements through Google AdSense to support our free service. Google may use cookies and similar technologies to show relevant advertisements, measure ad performance, and provide aggregate reporting to advertisers. You can control ad personalization through your Google Ad Settings or use ad blockers if you prefer.

How Your Files Are Transferred

  • Your devices establish a direct peer-to-peer connection using WebRTC
  • Files are encrypted and transferred directly between devices
  • No file data passes through our servers at any point
  • The connection is automatically closed when transfer completes

Cookies and Local Storage

Our website may use essential cookies required for the website to function properly, analytics cookies (Google Analytics tracking, can be disabled), advertising cookies (Google AdSense, can be blocked), and local storage for temporary storage of user preferences (stored locally on your device).

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services that may collect data:

  • Vercel — Hosting and website analytics
  • Google Analytics — Website analytics and usage tracking
  • Google AdSense — Displaying advertisements
  • Supabase — Authentication, database, and signaling data storage

Each of these services has their own privacy policies that govern how they handle data.

Data Retention

Since we don't store your files or file contents, there's no data retention policy for your content. Transfer metadata is kept only as long as it is needed to operate the service and is deleted when it is no longer required.

Security Measures

  • HTTPS encryption for all website communications
  • WebRTC encryption for all file transfers
  • Minimal data collection practices
  • Regular security audits and updates

Your Rights

Since we don't collect personal data, most data protection rights don't apply. However, you can block cookies and tracking through your browser settings, use ad blockers to prevent advertising cookies, or contact us with any privacy concerns.

Children's Privacy

Our service does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. If you believe a child has used our service, please contact us and we will investigate and take appropriate action.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated “last modified” date. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
