The server-based senders

WeTransfer: the incumbent, now on a leash

WeTransfer remains the most recognisable name, and its interface is still the smoothest way to email someone a few large files. But the free plan has shrunk hard: 3 GB per transfer, a rolling 30-day cap of 10 transfers or 3 GB total, and links that expire after 3 days. You now need an account. It is not end-to-end encrypted — files sit on WeTransfer's servers and are scanned or processed at their discretion. The July 2025 terms change that reserved rights over your files for AI training was reversed after a public backlash, but the episode told people what they needed to know. Paid tiers (roughly $10–$25/month) raise limits to 300 GB up to 1 TB per transfer, but they do not change the architecture: everything passes through their servers.

TransferNow: the generous free cloud tier

TransferNow quietly offers one of the best free cloud deals: 5 GB per transfer with no monthly quota, files available for 7 days, no account required, and password protection built in. It is GDPR-compliant (France) with AES-256 at rest and TLS in transit. The catch is the same one as every cloud sender — it is not end-to-end encrypted, and your bytes sit on their servers until expiry. For a one-off 'send this to a client' job it is hard to beat on the free tier.

Smash: unlimited size, with a queue

Smash is built around one promise: no size limit. True enough — free users can send files of any size, but anything over 2 GB gets queued behind paid transfers, which for a genuinely huge file can mean a long wait. Free links last 7 days and need only an email code. It is pleasant, has a nice carbon-footprint touch, and explicitly promises no AI training on your files. Like its peers it is not end-to-end encrypted. If you need a free no-limit cloud sender and can tolerate the queue, it is a reasonable pick.

The peer-to-peer crowd

Snapdrop & PairDrop: the open-source standard

Snapdrop was the original open-source, no-signup, WebRTC file drop, and PairDrop is the community-maintained fork that grew out of it — worth knowing because snapdrop.net itself was acquired by LimeWire and now routes your files through their cloud instead of peer to peer (the original code still works if self-hosted). PairDrop adds temporary public rooms (a 5-letter code or QR), persistent device pairing across networks, and TURN relay support so it works on strict NAT, VPNs, and public Wi-Fi. Files go straight between devices, encrypted with DTLS, and are never stored. Limits are set by your browser's memory rather than any server, so multi-GB transfers work in practice. The trade-off is fundamental to P2P: both people must be online at the same time, and there is no resume.

ShareDrop: the original, showing its age

ShareDrop pioneered room-based WebRTC sharing and deserves credit for it, but it has not aged well. Its chunked protocol with per-chunk acknowledgements caps throughput at roughly 30 MB/s even on fast links, it struggles on VPNs, and the project is effectively unmaintained — with community reports that sharedrop.io was also folded into LimeWire. For new projects, PairDrop is the more honest recommendation.

ToffeeShare: the zero-knowledge purist

ToffeeShare is the strongest 'nothing is stored' claim in this list. Files are encrypted end-to-end with DTLS 1.3 and never uploaded anywhere — the sender's browser holds the bytes and streams them directly to the receiver, using the shortest available path (it can even stay on your LAN). There is no size limit and no account. The flip side is strictness: the sender's tab must stay open for the entire transfer, there is no resume, and there is no history. A beta long-term sharing feature sidesteps this by storing files on a spare Android phone instead of a server. If zero-knowledge matters more than convenience, this is your tool.

LocalSend: offline LAN transfers, as an app

LocalSend is a native cross-platform app (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) rather than a browser service, so it is a different category — but worth a mention because it is the best answer to 'I want to move files with no internet at all.' It discovers devices on your network, transfers over HTTPS with per-device certificates, and works fully offline. It is LAN-only, needs port 53317 open, and its self-signed certificates mean you should verify the PIN or fingerprint on public Wi-Fi. For same-network transfers it is superb.

The hybrid: SendAnywhere

SendAnywhere tries to have it both ways, and mostly succeeds. Its 6-digit key mode sets up a direct, end-to-end encrypted transfer between two devices — up to 50 GB free, no account, key valid for about 10 minutes. That is genuinely P2P. Its link mode, though, goes back to a server: 10 GB free per link, links live 48 hours, and free accounts get only 10 GB of download traffic per month across all their links. So the P2P side is excellent and the link side is tighter than TransferNow's. A solid choice if you want both modes in one app.

What actually matters when choosing

  • Free limits — check the per-transfer cap AND the monthly cap. WeTransfer's free tier is the stingiest now; TransferNow and P2P tools have none.
  • Retention — cloud links expire in days. P2P sessions only live while both people are online. There is no free way to get 30-day availability.
  • End-to-end encryption — of the cloud senders, none are truly E2E. Every P2P tool here is, because there is no server to decrypt on.
  • The online requirement — P2P needs both devices online simultaneously. If your recipient fetches links later, you need a cloud sender or cloud storage.
  • Who owns the project — open-source P2P projects can change hands (see Snapdrop and ShareDrop). Prefer the actively maintained forks like PairDrop.
  • No-install matters — browser-based services work on any device with no app, which is the difference between ShareFile, PairDrop, ToffeeShare and app-based LocalSend.
